THE MYTH. THE LEGEND. THE UNICORN VA!

I came across a post in a Facebook Group a while ago asking if 'Unicorn' or 'Super VAs' really exist because the poster kept seeing people requesting a VA who could do graphics, web design, PR pitching, social media strategy, email management, SEO, running ads and copywriting. Understandably she was confused - do these VAs really exist? Because to her mind, this was at least 3 different roles for 3 different people. But she kept seeing these requests for the Unicorn VA and so asked our community if she was missing a trick.
Cue an influx of comments from various VAs confirming that yes, this is at least 3 different roles for 3 different people, and that the Unicorn VA doesn't actually exist, but that the [unrealistic] demand for them is there from people who, basically, don't want to pay for different specialists.
I'm the first to admit that there is a little confusion surrounding us VAs and what we do, but the best way to think about it is that the term Virtual Assistant refers to an industry rather than a skillset. Each VA will have their own strengths and niches, and so each VA will have their own unique offering.
For example, I class myself as a Virtual PA/EA and my skill set is very admin orientated, typing, composing letters/emails, email/inbox management, office management, diary management, stakeholder management, travel etc. etc. But there are also VAs out there who specialise in Web Design or Social Media Management, and you even get your Techie VAs who are wizards with a computer, digital products and funnels, plus many more. There are those with skills that overlap e.g., some Social Media Management VAs also offer basic admin too.
So, my advice when thinking about hiring a VA is to really sit down and mull over what it is you want to outsource. Pinpoint your needs and then search for the VA(s) who fits that bill and if you ever need a hand making those decisions or would like to pop on an introductory call, feel free to pop me an email or follow this link to make a booking and I'll help you as much as I can.
